I am using FrontPage2000.
I want to open EXE file (for example NOTEPAD.EXE) from Hyperlink in a html.
But when I click the Link, a download dialog pops up before the program
starts.
Is it possible to open the EXE except the download dialog?

Simon

Joe,
Thanks for your prompt reply.
If I go to File->Open in IE then I can run an .exe without the dialogue.
Is it not possible to embed this function by FrontPage2000?

Simon

What exactly is it that you're trying to achieve here? Because I can tell
you almost certainly that you're trying the wrong way. And by what you're
trying to achieve I don't mean "run an .exe without the dialogue." I mean,
what business requirement of your web site are you trying to satisfy by this
tactic?

Big things are made up
of lots of little things.

We have an Intranet portal (html) in our organization.
At the moment the portal tells users addresses for many information
materials in Internet and our information resources in our servers.
Now I intend to embed links for tools (application programs to handle
information) into the html.
Users will be able to achieve whole the work of information survey from IE.

Simon

Hold on, Simon. When you say "Now I intend to embed links for tools..." you
are not talking about business requirements. You are talking about a
solution FOR a business requirement. What is the business requirement? What
do these "tools" supposedly do? What do they enable people to do?

Thanks for your following.
But I do not intend to disclose further information about our system here.
Here is the newsgroup specialized for FrontPage.
I want to know just whether or not FrontPage is able to do.

Simon

It isn't a FrontPage issue, it's a computer security issue.
You can not launch an executable from a html web page.

However, you might be able to do it from an .hta
( html application )

Hello,

I know it has been several months since you've asked the above questio
and I also see that the person answering your question didn't reall
help you. My question is to you, did you figure out how to do it?
I'm asking, because I'm trying to create a link that will automaticall
open an exe too. I've achieved something very close to this already
but can't figure out how to specify the program. For example: At th
company I work for we use several telnet functions and I wanted t
create a link that would automatically open the telnet program an
connect to a specific machine. I managed to do this by puttin
"telnet:// machine-name" in the middle of my ancore tag. Now if Fron
Page can do this, then I know there is a way to have it open anothe
exe too

You can *not* open / launch an executable from a html window in a browser.
Yes you can launch the Telnet "protocol" ( actually called opening a Telnet Session ) from a
browser window just as you can launch the ftp protocol from a browser window.

Your Telnet session is running in a "browser environment" also known as the browser "domain."
You can *not* launch a program that runs in the "system domain" from the "browser domain." It's
purely a security issue.
Imagine the chaos if we could run system commands from a web site / browser window!!

You can also telnet and ftp from a command window if you really want to.
