Open Empty Common Folder on Desktop after start up

My XP SP2 machine now has an empty common foder (subfolder of program files
folder) open on my desktop after startup. I assume that some program is
supposed to run but isn't there. I have a Common Files subfolder in Program
Files that has lot of files in it but the common folder is empty. I've tried
msconfig and the only prgram that seems to be looking for common is Adobe
Gamma marked common~1. If I disable it for starup I still have the empty
folder.

Any ideas?

Try running the edit on Kelly's site:

Line 15: Remove Common Tasks from the Desktop

See the top of the page for info on running the edit.

Thanks for the advice, but it didn't work. I ran the tweak but got the same
result. What would cause it? Should I reinstall a piece of software?

I might not have understood your question. I thought it was the common
tasks that was showing up, but clearly that's not so. Try running
autoruns from system internals to see what shows as running at startup.

I downloaded the utility - It's great - but I couldn't find any entry with
the path including common as a subdirectory of Program files. The window
that is open is empty with common in the heading. If I go up a level in the
directory I'm in Program Files. The Common directory is empty. There is, of
course a common files directory with many files in it. I'm going to just
delete the empty directory and see what happens.
