Client complains that the audio does not work. You open Sound and Audio Devices in Control Panel only to find that everything is "greyed" out and you cannot make any changes. At this point you decide to open Device Manager to make sure the sound card is properly installed. It opens but is totally blank, what do you do?

1 Check the Plug and Play Service
2 Have the sound card replaced, it is causing a system conflict.
3 Uninstall and then reinstall the audio drivers
4 System is infected with the MP3 virus, disinfect it.

Hi and welcome to PCR

Is the "client " using XP or Vista?
Is it onboard sound or a add in sound card? (creative)

Always try the drivers first before you go looking for anything else, on the bottom right of your desktop is usually where the sound/volume icon is, is it there or does it say "no audio device installed"?

Also check in the BIOS that onboard sound is enabled (if you're using onboard sound)

XP IS THE OPERATING SYTEM

out of those four answers at the bottom which would you do?

Try 3 first,

then if its an add-in card take it out, disconnect from internet, uninstall any drivers or software, then put card back in, reinstall drivers.

Check that output is via proper device and that speaker config is correct.

Whats the sound card???

This smacks of a homework question to me ...

If it is a homework question then its total crap!

There could be 1000 reasons, but just 4, i think Belloni had an audio problem and none of those answers worked.

Good old Microsoft support,

RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, set the startup type for Plug and Play to Automatic. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
2. Double-click Plug and Play.

If you receive a Configuration Manager message, click OK.
3. In the Startup Type list, click Automatic, and then click OK.
4. Close Services.
5. Restart the computer.
