open and close

This has probably been mentioned before and if it has I apologise I must
have missed it

When I open a news group in Thunderbird at least one thread is expanded
all the time no matter what ng I go to its always the same .. how do I
stop this .. I have tried the * key and the / key as in the FAQ section
, this works when expanding all or closing all but not the problem I
have of just one thread always open .. is there a way to overcome this ?
Also in my newsgroup folder how do I get the full name of the newsgroup
instead of just the Abbreviations ?

I would also like to prevent this particular behavior,
but have also been unsuccessful in trying ....

The only related setting seems to be ....

Thunderbird/Tools/Options/General

[] Remember last selected

Toggling that off/on/off has worked for me
in only 1 of several NewsGroups, but in all others
some message or thread is always pre-selected
when moving into a new group ....

I'm using Thunderbird 0.8 ....

I think I remember reading that there was
a Thunderbird extension available for this,
but don't remember which one, something about
the group pane ....

I've got the same problem Stuart but it doesn't happen in all ng. Weird.
If you go to the homepage, tips & tricks, there is a fix for the folder
problem, however in my case it wouldn't work. It involves creating a
file in your profile directory.
