Has anyone opened one of these? I want to replace the drive in my
powerbook with the 100 gig and put the 60 gig from the laptop into the
enclosure. Samsclub has the drive for $150.

I'm wondering if there is a good site with directions or someone with
experience or advice.

Thanks,
Wayne

There are some user ratings and comments at
<http://www.pricegrabber.com/rating_getprodrev.php/masterid=5510065/id_t
ype=masterid >, but none mentions opening the case. (Some do mention
that the this drive is marginal at running on USB bus power, which was
also my experience with the Momentus 5400.2 drive in a non-Seagate
enclosure.)

You can get the Momentus 100GB drive for about $130 and a 2.5 inch USB
enclosure for less than $30 or a FireWire enclosure for less than $50.
If you want to run an external drive on bus power or boot your PowerBook
from it, you're better off with FireWire. (But avoid enclosures with
Prolific chipsets).

FWIW, the Hitachi Travelstar 5K100 is slightly noisier but also a little
cheaper and faster than the Seagate.

Please verify whether your System will support the size HD you want. I
just replaced my GW450Xl 60Gb with the 80Gb MAXIMUM allowed by my
system, 80GB Seagate, ($125) and no problems with that process. Just
unscrewed, unplugged, moved adaptor, replugged, rescrewed and voila
system happy with new HD.

Why would the hardware be limited to 80Gb? If the software can use it,
why does it matter? The Bios?

I never thought about an upper limit.

AFAIK that's not a problem for external drives that attach by USB or
Firewire.

Identifying the make and model of the laptop you plan to install the
100GB drive in might help.

Looks like that drive only comes with a one year warranty. Looks like
this may not be the solution for me. I am attracted to the seagates
because of the five year warranty.

If you buy the drive separately, as an internal drive not already
installed in an enclosure, it will be covered by Seagate's five year
warranty.

Yeah, its better to buy the external housing seperately and
dont tell seagate that you are putting their drive into one of
those. That way you still get the 5 year warranty on the drive.
