oops I goofed my BOOT.INI

my boot.ini referred to two 'versions' of W2K - one working, the other
had major problems, guess which line I deleted.............

I tried to do a 'recover', but all I get is 'access denied' ( I have
admin rights ).
There doesn't seem to be a text editor available in 'recover' mode???
I also have a 'correct' copy of boot.ini in:"C:\TMP", but I get
'access' problems for that directory also........

I've seen references to commands like 'FIXmbr', but I don't think that
will help in this situation, because it will probably just point to the
'wrong' folder-which is why I'm here in the first place...........

TIA

The Recovery Console command bootcfg /rebuild will rebuild
c:\boot.ini. Alternatively you can create the file on some other
machine, then copy it from a floppy disk to C:\ of your problem
machine while in Recovery Console mode.

I don't think that will work for Windows 2000

Try creating a boot disk. For the floppy to successfully boot Windows 2000
the disk must contain the "NT" boot sector. Format a diskette (on a Windows
2000 machine, not a DOS/Win9x, so the NT boot sector gets written to the
floppy), and copy Windows 2000 versions of ntldr, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini
to it. Edit the boot.ini to give it a correct ARC path for the machine you
wish to boot. Below is an example of boot.ini. The default is to start the
operating system located on the first partition of the primary or first
drive (drive0). Then drive0 partition 2 and so on.

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows 2000 0,1"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows 2000 0,2"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows 2000 1,1"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows 2000 1,2"

Thanks for the info - I tried the floppy/copy, which did not do the
trick. Seems like maybe a senior moment happened and I don't have the
correct name of the folder for the 'good' copy OR the 'good' copy now
has the exact problems that the 'bad' copy has.....not likely. I'll
investigate the correct folder name and/or try the 'bootcfg/rebuild' OR
(darn) start from scratch ( no important data lost - just 'important'
time.........gets longer every time,too<grin>).

One of the advantages of newsgroups is that every contribution
is subject to peer review, including my own. This prevents
incorrect information from being published, such as the
command bootcfg /rebuild, which works on WinXP PCs only
but not under Win2000. Thanks, Dave, for pointing this out.

Copying a:\boot.ini to C:\ in Recovery Console mode works
quite nicely, even if the OP does not think so. Please show
us the exact command you used!
