I have two XP Pro machines on a network machine A can ping
machine B (though not by name) but machine B cannot ping
Machine A. I can't figure out any reason they shouldn't
be able to see each other. They are both connected on a
Linksys DSL router running DHCP. Both machines can access
the Internet and see the router just fine.

First, address the problem of pinging by IP address:

One-way pings are usually caused by a firewall on the unpingable machine.
Ensure the XP firewall is disabled on the LAN adapter on the unpingable
machine.
Un-install all other firewalls untill you get the problem fixed.

Then address the problem of not being able to ping by name.

On the machine which cannot originate the ping-by-name,

- In TCP/IP advanced properties, ensure NetBIOS over
TCP/IP is enabled;
- Go to a command prompt and issue the command ipconfig /all,
and report the Node Type.
