Only One Instance Please

I have a user running Word 2000 on Windows XP. Every morning this person
starts the day with a clicking frenzy. This seems to result of multiple
instances of Winword.exe running at the same time. This causes error
messages as one normally runs just one instance of Winword.exe and has the
one instance open all the documents you need.
So my question is, "Is there a way for Windows to allow only one instance
of a designated program to run at one time?" I thought the group policy
manager might work or some other registry switch. But I wanted to inquire
here before I search all of windows for an answer.

You'll probably get a better response from the experts in one of the office
newsgroups, but my first inkling is the setting is within the "word" options
somewhere on whether to "open all documents in the same window" or " open a
new instance of word for each document" - I'm sure that's where I've seen
it, just don't have the time to search.
