Bradley C. Hammerstrom

A2K, WinXP and Win2K,

We have a small office (5) with a file server. We all have equal access to
the server. Why then do I have to first open any particular db (not split
and stored on the server) from my PC before others in the office can open
it. If anyone else opens it first (say, Marie), others who try to open it
get the "The database has been placed in a state by 'Admin' on 'Marie' that
prevents it from being shared."

Yet checking Tools>Options>Advanced shows the default settings including
Open in Shared Mode.

What's going on?

How do they open the database, by clicking its icon directly or from a
shortcut or else?
You may check if /excl switch is present in a command line arguments of the
shortcut.
Other possibility, though unlikly, is misconfigured network rights. You may
ask a user to create a text file in the directory where the mdb resides, and
ask anyone else to modify, save and then delete it. If this goes smoothly,
then the network rights not an issue.

Alex,

More info:

Others do have read/write/delete share rights in network folder on server
(LAN), so I don't think that's it.

No shortcuts are used to open any mdb. The attempt to open is made by
"recent files list" in Access, or File>Open in Access, or by double-click on
mdb file in folder on server.

The error more accurately reads, "The database has been placed in a state by
'Admin' on 'Marie'
that prevents it from being opened or locked."

I just got this error while trying to open a mdb that is presently open on
Marie's computer. However, if I open this file alone first, then Marie is
able to also open it without the error. And again checking the Default Open
Mode is set to Shared.

As far as I know, nothing special has been setup or configured on my PC that
would affect this.

When Marie opens the mdb first, is an LDB file created in the network folder
on the server?
If not, she doesn't have adequate permissions.
She may have Read, Modify, and Delete rights, but not Create.

MacDermott,

Marie does, in fact, create an LDB file (in the same network folder at the
mdb) when she first opens it. I imagine this is why her name appears in the
error message (ie, the lock file contains such info).

I've done some testing since I posted this and discovered that if the first
opener has all other forms closed except for the custom switchboard, then
other users may open the same db. It's a workaround, but . . .

Alex,

You got it. I have SP-1 installed for Office 2000, others do not. It is a
known bug.

Thank you,

Brad H.
