I have just installed a new Hitachi Deskstar 160Gb HD, and winxp only
see or recognises 32Gb.

I have SP2 installed and checked big lba is enabled.
What else do I have to do to get all 160Gb recognised?
Thanks

I dont really konw. i had the same problem with a SATA HD. Go to the
manufactuers site, download the drivcer for your HD, and install it.
Then go into the BIOS settings and change them to the first boot as (n
hard drive) and the second boot as (n hard drive) for example first
boot : 160 gb hd and the second boot: the 32 gb hd.
Good luck!
Try posting at youngcoders.com or just browse around on the internet.
You'll find some good information sometime.
Sorry not to be of that much help.

I don't know which exact model that is, but check a Hitachi
web page, for information on "clip jumper". For example,
this drive has some options for clipping to 32GB. Notice
how this drive has a ton of options, making it difficult
to "store" extra jumpers on the jumper block.

A good page to look for your drive:

Several possibilities:

1. If the disk format is FAT32 and if it was made by XP, then 32Gig is all
you can get, per partition. If NTFS, XP will format as large as you like
per partition.

2. BIOS/motherboard limit? Some older PCs had a limit at 32 Gig. If you
have one of those, then you are stuck with 32 Gig per hard drive as long as
you connect ot the disk controller on the motherboard. A solution would be
to install a PCI-to-ATA controller card, which has its own BIOS.

3. In theory jumpers could be used to limit a disk to less than its full
potential. Carefully read the disk documentation and remove any such
jumpers.

4. When you say "XP sees only 32 Gig" are you talking about Windows
Explorer or the XP disk mangement console? Explorer can only see formatted
partitions, and then only FAT32 and NTFS. The disk managment console can
see more, including unformatted space and non-windows partitions. It can
also delete partitions and create new ones. If you see a lot of free space,
try creating a partition in it.

Is it formated as ntfs or fat32

<snip>

a good question here...
as XP can only create a 32gig fat32 drive...
with NTFS there is no such limit.

if fat32 was chosen...
time to start over and use NTFS

Otherwise...check the drive jumpers
as some drives have a 32gig limit jumper

Thanks for the links. It turned out to be the jumper setting I had!
Silly me had it set to 32gb without realizing.
