When I re-install my xp, I am the only user, say with initials XYZ. How can
I now lock in as an administrator so that I can back up the registry? Please
guide, thanks

If you are performing a clean install and create only one user account, XP
gives that account Administrator permissions by default.

To backup the registry, create a restore point.

When I installed the OS, as explained above and I am using XP SP1. Start in
safe mode and give me 2 icons, "Administrator" and "XYZ". Is this normal.?

Yes.
"Administrator" is a built in account. Hidden if there are other user
accounts on the system. Regard it as a "reserve" account. One you can log
onto to perform troubleshooting or repairs if other accounts go belly up.
