Only 1 PC at a time will show in workgroup

Technical info: Wired peer-to-peer network consisting of 2 PCs running XP
Pro SP2 through router (with firewall). Network had been working quite awhile
ago with file and printer sharing. I feel it might have stopped working after
a Windows update. I was using Norton SystemWorks. That program is now
uninstalled. IRPStackSize is set to 15 on both PCs. I can ping using IP
address or computer name back and forth and on each PC. I was trying to fix
my workgroup problem, but I did finally try the wizard with no luck and it
keeps turning on the Windows firewall (I want to use router firewall only) if
I want to file and printer share. That still did not solve my problem of the
error message above. Internet access works fine. I have folders shared on
both PCs. I never found I had to have identical Windows users set up on both
machines when it worked before. What else did I forget to mention?

Additional info -

If I reboot the PC receiving the error, it will show on the workgroup and
then the other PC gets the error message.

flashes up and quickly disappears. How do I get the window to stay open till
I close it so I can read the info?


NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled on both PCs (I had enabled it on both)

The Windows firewall is off on boths PCs (using router firewall)

I only have an anti-virus program now

TCP/UDP port 445 open on router (had to open for incoming traffic). One of
your links stated both TCP & UDP. The other said just TCP. Which is correct
please?

of commands I run

OK, now that you know, Enable NetBT. For a small LAN, it's essential.

What router (make and model please) do you have? If it's a NAT router, there is
no firewall. And NAT only protects the computers on the LAN from what's on the
Internet, NOT from each other.

What AntiVirus program is it? Look for a bundled protection that acts like a
firewall!

What traffic do you have, that you had to open the router for? Remember again,

Ok. I'll re-enable NetBios over TCP/IP on both PCs. I'll also remove the open
ports I added. Thank you for explaining Chuck.

Router is a Netgear FWAG114. Anti-virus has been switched recently from
Norton SystemWorks to Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0. Turning the anti-virus off
has no effect on my results/problem.

With the changes above, ... WHOOOW!! I can see both PCs on one PC. On the
other PC... YES!! both are visible on both PCs. Thank you so much Chuck.

I'll turn back on the anti-virus and try to access each PCs shared resources
now. I'll repost a reply if I have any more problems.

P.S. The other thing I did earlier today was go through the network
properties based on this article -

First, please resolve the NetBT issue. Are you logged in as an admin (hopefully
not), or as a full user which has the right to optionally run as admin. You
must run the Network Wizard as an administrator. UAC should prevent you from
getting the old tab etc without running as admin. If you were able to disable
Windows Firewall, you can Enable NetBT. Unless you Enable NetBT, you should
expect this problem.

Can I not assign rights the old way (with the tab)? I do not want to use the
wizard. Is that my only option? If so, it keeps turning on the Windows
firewall which I do not want to use. If I try to turn it off... some issue
with sharing comes up in a warning like message box.

Vista, where people are constantly complaining.

Well, since you asked I do have one more small detail I'm struggling with.
Here's the scoop -

Same network and PCs
Computer A can access computer B's shared resources without being prompted
with a Windows login box. Computer B to access computer A's shared resources
is prompted with a Windows login screen. I remember setting it up this way
back when, but I cannot remember how I did it. I would like to remove it now.
And for B to access A, I must have set it up so that there is only one
specific Windows user on A that has permission. I've check the sharing
permissions on the share tab as well as the security tab. I do not see my
problem there e.g. that the only user on A has permission.

Any idea what I did so that I can undo the Windows login requirement?

Well, since you asked I do have one more small detail I'm struggling with.
Here's the scoop -

Same network and PCs
Computer A can access computer B's shared resources without being prompted
with a Windows login box. Computer B to access computer A's shared resources

So you're using Advanced File Sharing (SFS turned off). Is the single user
activated for network access, on both computers?

Yes, SFS is off. The Guest account on both PCs is off/disabled.

And do you have the same non-Guest account, with identical password, activated
for network access on both computers? Did you select "Reconnect at logon" for
each share?
