After it is all said and done if you have not scanned your computer
with a known good online scan tool then you have not gone through all
your options. In fact, it is a great maintenance tool.
If you are arriving here for help then this is an option:

We link to the pros in the field.
Want some good security tips then check out the Sans reading room.
One
out of many.
Keep you virus definitions up to date.
Store data away (partition) from your OS install(Windows).
Get a firewall and use it, especially if you have Cable with a static
IP that they can hit over and over and over again as it broadcasts
over and over and over again.
All the big boy AV's scan pretty well. Some get some things, all miss
some things. Get one and stick with it for a while. Uninstalling it
can be a mess *sometimes* .
Forget the emotional cries of your friends and neighbors, don't
believe all sales people, and try not to rely on tech support.
If you think you are infected - do not pay online - go to the store.
Many viruses are not that harmful and many are easy to get rid of.
Scanning with an alternate source than the one on your machine is a
wise choice, that's why we are in the process of consolidating these
sources into one spot.
