Online videos keep re-buffering

Using XP Home and IE6 with DSL connection and router. Up until a few days
ago I could enjoy watching video clips online which ran smoothly...no
re-buffering. All of a sudden without any changes to my system I can not
watch more than 10-20 seconds of a video and it stops and starts buffering
all over again. Is there a fix for this? A step-by-step is appreciated.
Thanks in advance for helping someone with very limited knowledge on this.

As this is in the basics group I'm wondering how deep to go... Chances are
that it's not suddenly something IE or your computer (in its normal
functionality) has done but rather is likely due to network congestion. The
reasons for this are infinite, from noise on the line to degraded service do
to parts of a TelCo switch burning out. A couple of more likely causes would
be malware that is eating up part of your bandwidth or even the site that
you're using having bandwidth issues.

I don't suppose you have a speed test completed from before this happened so
that you can compare it with a speed test now? You might also try a
traceroute to the site(s) in question to see where the latency is as well as
inspecting your own packets for transmitted data that could be causing the
slowdown. A good malware scan might turn something up though.

A bit of some rather general information and some links can be found here:

Yes, yes I know I should really update it. It will be sometime in the near
future hopefully but life's been keeping me busy.
