I keep seeing descriptions in Windows Update that
an "online" version of the MS Software Removal tool is
available (as opposed to a downloaded version). I guess
that means I could run that tool without downloading
anything? I looked all over microsoft.com and couldn't
find anything about it. I'd appreciate any comments.

thanks.

You are talking about the "malicious software rmoval tool" This tool comes
with autoupdates every second Tuesday, so there's no need to go looking for
it. A new one will come in next week.

This is not Microsoft Antispyware, or even related. This is an antivirus
tool which targets a small set of high-profile viruses.

Look for it using the name I gave above--it isn't hard to find. And, as you
mention, there's an online version, as well as the downloaded version.
There's virtually no UI to this tool--if your system is uninfected, all that
you'll ever see in the autoupdate version is the EULA, and, if you look
hard, a log file left on the system.
