One place to start is
http://addbalance.com/usersguide
It is a series of tutorials designed for the intermediate user.
My favorite book on the subject, though, is still the "Word Processing Book"
by (I think) Peter McWilliams. No current commercial word processing program
is really designed for use by a beginner in that they are all very complex
programs. Nevertheless, we all begin somewhere. A beginner can produce
documents in any of them, including Word. However, if the person doesn't
work learn the program, the documents will be kludges compared to what could
be done. To me a "kludge" means something that may look and print fine but
will be much harder than necessary to edit (and probably produce).
