Sort of. If you block the contacts you don't wish to see you online, then they'll see you
offline and everyone else will see you online.

Need a Windows Live Messenger 8 Invite? http://messenger.jonathankay.com/redir/invite.asp
I don't believe that is what OP is asking. I had a similar problem with
Windows Messenger--some people would see me as on line and others saw me as
off line at the same time. The opposite was also true--people would show as
being off line when I knew they were on line. I never got an answer to the
problem here. I finally got fed up with the situation and installed MSN
Messenger. After that, I deleted all my contacts and then added them again
(note: this did not fix the problem with Windows Messenger). In one
instance, another person was required to delete and add me again. Now all
is well.
In that scenario, you must completely delete and readd your contacts as the relationship
between you and your contacts within the Messenger database has been broken.

The only problem is that it would not work with Windows Messenger--upgrading
(?) to MSN Messenger was also required.
On a personal note: your MVP profile is incomplete and there is no contact
info listed. I was going to try to mail you direct when this all started
but was thwarted by the lack of info.
