ONline gaming with AOM

I am having problems with USB ADSL modem when playing AOM
under XP. I play for about 9 or 10 mins then game freezes
and modem does not respond.

Also prior to this problem occurring, when I exited the
game and disconnected from internet, the disconnect
window and modem would hang and not respond, and would
not recognise the modem upon re-booting.

would greatly apprecaite feed back on this, as XP at the
moment there appears to be little point in having XP.
win98SE is slower, but at least it works.

Which version of DirectX are you running, Mark? You may need to update on
Windows Update to 9.0b. Should anyway, because there's a security problem
in 9.0a without being patched. You may also want to check this Knowledge

I have now installed Directx9.0b

I can play games now once I am logged alright.
But when I close the game, leave the server and then try
to disconnect from the internet to shutdown the computer,
the dialogue box still hangs.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you, but why do you need to disconnect from the
Internet if you're using DSL? This sounds as if you're on some sort of
service which requires you to logon and logoff, is that correct? If so,
have you asked their support section why you're getting that pop-up?
