Last night while online I noticed a continuous and substantial flow of data
over my internet connection, particularly "outgoing" data. I wasn't
downloading a file or email, wasn't loading a web page.

So I'm wondering what that big data transfer really was. I doubt if it was
anything malicious, but is there a good tool to tell me where data is being
sent and where it's going?

Usually system tools can give you such information.

If you were downloading then the bulk of the traffic would
have been incoming, not outgoing.

I'd be concerned.. Some firewalls will show you traffic
patterns, and inbound/outbound traffic for applications. I
use outpost firewall (free), and it offers this. I am sure
others may also do so.

I would think that it was only someone trying to get your bank
passwords, copies of any software you have purchased, registration
numbers for paid commercial software, copies of any legal/financial
files you have.

Of course they might only be wanting to change/alter/delete a number
of your files and/or transfer pornography to your computer etc.

Or get enough of your "personal" information to be successful in an
"identity theft" exercise.

You should find out if the latter is the case when debt collectors
call, or the police, or you have your credit stopped.

Or they may simply be wanting to get a better idea of what's on your
system for installation of better viruses/trojans.

You should find out if the latter is the case if you find that
3,000,000 spam emails have been sent from *your* PC. Your ISP
will tell you. Just before they close your account.

Nothing really to worry about.
