One Workgroup, two databases

I have two Access 97 databases using the same workgroup file. Is that good
practice, or would it be best to have two separate workgroup files. I'm just
setting up the second database, so now's the time to change it if that's the
best way.

There are a total of 12 users. The original database has 6 users, the new
one will have all 12. I've set the permissions for the new 6 so they cannot
open the original database, but now I'm wondering if I should have setup a
new workgroup file.

Thanks for your advice. Mary

I would keep just one workgroup file. Think of the workgroup as defining
users and groups of users (regardless of the databases they might use).

Thanks, Joan. I've been using Newsgroups for a while, and have learned so
much from you! Mary

While you could use the same workgroup file, there is a potential issue.
Supposing the 6 new users are assigned to the same groups as the 6 existing
users and your original mdb bases permissions on group membership...you will
have then given the 6 new users permissions to use your original mdb.
Depending on the nature of the database, this may not be desirable.
Likewise, you may not want the 6 existing users to have permissions on the
new database. You may need to create new groups within the workgroup file
to overcome this potential problem. This issue becomes more complicated as
new databases use the workgroup file for permissions...so, you'll want to be
keep that in mind. You also have to be careful when assigning people to
groups.
