I am finding quite difficult to troubleshoot this networking problem. Let me
explain. I am connecting my Desktop running Xp with my Laptop running 2K,
directlty through a crossover patch cable. I am using static IP on the
private range 192.168.0.0 with 255.255.255.0 subnetting. I can ping the
localhost in both computers. The arp table is populated dynamically. Sometime
I get a request timed out from both directions. sometime one direction pings
fine but the other one comes with the request timed out message. I haven't
been able to test another network card on my laptop, so I do not know if it's
a hardware problem related with my laptop's card. Please, can you help with
this. has become quite frustrating?!!!

Thanks

This type of problem is usually caused by a firewall, perhaps
one that is bundled with your virus scanner.

By the way, I don't understand what you mean with "One way
connectivity". One way which way? Pinging "localhost" does not
send packets anywhere other than your own machine, so where
is the one-way bit?

Posting the output of "ipconfig.exe /all" from both machines
might shed some more light on your problem. Checking the
network status applet while pinging will assist you further.
