I am trying to network a desktop and a laptop. The
desktop can see the laptop's files but not the other way
around. I have disabled ZoneAlarm and Internet Connection
Firewall in both. I don't understand why the laptop can't
see the desktop's files. Any ideas? I have spent many,
many hours on this.

Make sure that NetBIOS Over TCP/IP is enabled on both computers:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection and click Properties.
3. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
4. Click Advanced.
5. Click WINS.
6. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.

Don't just disable ZoneAlarm -- un-install it, using the un-install
procedure provided by the manufacturer. Then, go to Start | Run |
Msconfig | Startup and disable any remnants of ZoneAlarm.

If that makes everything work, re-install ZoneAlarm and configure it
to allow access by computers on the local area network.

Michelle,

In many cases, disabling ZoneAlarm is not sufficient. Removing
ZoneAlarm completely frequently has been necessary in my experience.

Are both computers in the same workgroup? Are you using a common
account / password on both computers?

Cheers,

Chuck
