Memory is too important to risk getting it on ebay.
Go to http://www.crucial.com and use their Memory
Advisor to find memory that is compatble with your
computer, and by all means get ECC if that's one of
the choices for your computer.

Post a question to the seller asking specific questions. If he doesn't
answer, walk away. If the answer is vague, walk away. If in doubt, walk
away. If the ram is BNIB, then ask the same questions and still consider
walking away. Only if you are happy with the answer, condition of the RAM
and price should you bid.

This all sounds negative, but be sceptical with ebay. I have bought RAM 3 or
4 times and only once received a 'duff' stick - it was damaged in the post
and I got my money back.

That's right, GT. Many of those eBay sellers are con artists. I can
tell you many of them don't actually have the item, they're just
resellers for wholesalers who have the item. So don't be fooled into
thinking they're legitimate, big businesses.
