As Windows loads up, it will give me the usual: "Windows did not start
successfully ... Would you like to go Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking,
Last known good configuration or Start Windows normal." When I enter last
know configuration, it says "Windows could not start because the following
file is missing or corrupt ... C:Windows\System32\config\system

If I enter start Windows normal or the other choices, this is the error
message it gives me:

Stop: C0000218 (registry file failure)
The registry cannot load the hive (file)
\Systemroot\System32\Config\SAM
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further
assistance

Afterthis message, then it proceeds to reboot with the same problem.

There is a corrupted registry file. I suggest trouble shooting in this
order.
1. Boot from a XP CD (if you have one) into Recovery Console and run chkdsk
/r since disk errors are one frequent cause of this error.
2. Look at the following procedure. - How to recover from a corrupted
registry that prevents Windows XP from starting
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545
3. If the drive is OK and the above procedure is excluded or fails, try a
repair install.

My recovery media does not allow me to get into the recovery console like a
normal XP CD. It is 3 CD's. How do I repair if I can't get into the repair
console?

Review the options offered by your recovery media and select the best one
for the situation.

NOTE: If there is a floppy disk drive on the system, you could try using
the Recovery Console included in the boot disk set of floppies:

There is no floppy. Just a DVD/CDRW drive. The recovery media doesn't really
allow any options. Basically, you just pop in the 1st CD and it start
recovering, then prompts for the 2nd & 3rd CD's.

Sorry that you don't have a floppy - you could have used the floppy disk
set to run the Recovery Console. Not having one is very common these days.
Don't have one on my desktop either.

Unfortunately, the limited abilities of your recovery media limit your
choices of repair methods. You might call support for your laptop for
suggestions. There's a slim chance they may be able to offer you
alternatives but most likely they will refer you to using your recovery
media. Can't hurt to ask...

I have a floppy drive from a desktop I could pull from. But could I configure
a floppy drive to a laptop?
