All my machines connect to the internet through a DSL
line which is attached to a firewall then to my network
switch. My RRAS server has one nic connected to the
network switch then to the DSL. When I installed RRAS for
VPN my server dropped from the network. I was unable to
ping the server. When I stopped the service it came back
online. This server is running 2k with SP3 and Exchange
200o with SP3.

Any idea as to why this happens? I thought it was just
this one server but when I tested on another server with
same hardware config it did the same thing.

By default, the RRAS server sets up filters on the public interface to allow
only the VPN requests.

From the troubleshooting section in http://support.microsoft.com/?id=308208

a.. Cause:Cannot connect to the VPN server over the Internet using the
Ping.exe utility.

Solution: Due to the PPTP and L2TP over IPSec packet filtering that is
configured on the Internet interface of the VPN server, Internet Control
Message Protocol (ICMP) packets used by the ping command are filtered out.
To enable the VPN server to respond to ICMP (ping) packets, you need to add
an input filter and an output filter that allow traffic for IP protocol 1
(ICMP traffic).

See Windows 2000 online Help for more information about how to add a packet
filter.
