Just as I thought, it's all about the money!

So why all the double secret probation garbage? Why didn't he just tell the
truth from the beginning? He got a job offer he couldn't/wouldn't refuse.
Makes sense but not the way he handled the transition. IMO, the truth is
still the best policy.

The truth is out there. You just have to look in the right places and ask
the right questions.

Well, perhaps he was not allowed to tell the whole story at that point (by
the firm who was dangling the job). That would be my best guess. I am glad
that he ended up where the product landed (obviously not a big surprise
there). At least his attention to detail and craftsmanship has a chance of
being utilized to the full.

Yes, the company he joined is so large and has so many products it is no
surprise that he went there!

They have _one_ product other than Everest, and it is a file interchange
product (Windows only).

Looks like he teamed up with another sole developer to try and make a quid.

Here's a good bit from the web site: "Lavalys is a privately held
company that is headquartered in Montreal (Canada) with sales and R&D
offices in Hungary and Italy."

Looks more and more like he used the freeware stuff to debug and
finalise his product.

I hope his chooks all turn into emus and kick his dunny door down!

Cheers,

Not sure what that means (chooks, emus, dunny) [ok, I know what an emu is!]
but why would you be upset he finally decided to stop giving his hard work
away? The new company (lavalys) so far is also giving away a freeware
version and holding some stuff back in the for-pay version. I have no
problem with that. I don't plan on spending any money with them, but they
are free to try out that business model.

Chooks & emus & dunny doors is an old Australian insult. Chooks are
chickens, emus are emus, and a "dunny" is a toilet, particularly an
external "single room" type. The rest is left to your imagination.

It may just be that I am far too cynical these days, but as a
professional (i.e. I get paid to do it) software developer, I _know_ how
hard it is to get a decent beta-testing program under way, when someone
uses freeware as a sneaky way to get their software tested, it pisses me
off.

Yes, there are others who do this sort of thing, but often you can at
least be suspicious. For example, Hotmail Popper had $ware on their
site, so it was no big surprise when it stopped being freeware.

Have you checked the website? Typical hype site.

lol - thanks for the lesson mate. Have a Fosters for me.

Selfish bastard.

So he used Joe Public to run a BETA test. So what? Plenty of people
have benefitted and to my knowledge his software has not caused one bit
of harm to any system.

Good on him for finally making a few quid. Perhaps he might be able at
last to have a half decent standard of living. I notice you're a
professional software developer. Does the word HYPOCRITE ring any
bells?

hehe I couldn't tell whether the "I hope his chooks..." remark meant that
he was upset or not. I gather that you believe he is chuffed that he went
the corporate route... Well, all I can say is this: Aida32 was a damn fine
product as freeware and I got a lot of good value from it and it helped me
immensely several times. Now that it looks like it is going to go to Lavalys
(or whatever) I will look at it from time to time.

Remember Peter Norton's original proggies? Clean; lean; simple and direct?
Now look at Symantec...

I wish Tamos all the best.

Go and look up the meaning of hypocrite. To save you time, here's one
from Webster's 1913 Dictionary:

Definition:
\Hyp"o*crite\, n. [F., fr. L. hypocrita, Gr. ? one who
plays a part on the stage, a dissembler, feigner. See
{Hypocrisy}.]
One who plays a part; especially, one who, for the purpose of
winning approbation of favor, puts on a fair outside seeming;
one who feigns to be other and better than he is; a false
pretender to virtue or piety; one who simulates virtue or
piety.

The hypocrite's hope shall perish. --Job viii.
13.

I dare swear he is no hypocrite, but prays from his
heart. --Shak.

Syn: Deceiver; pretender; cheat. See {Dissembler}.

I have never produced freeware and then shifted it to payware. I have
only produced payware or stuff that I put explicitly into the public
domain, not even under the GPL.

I'm not the hypocrite here.

Cheers,
Gary B-)
