I would like to know what to do when I get a text balloon
in my taskbar saying "This or that file:corrupted file,
please run the chkdsk utility".
I usually run it from Start->Run->chkdsk /f and then
reboot as it tells me it can't go ahead but will do a
chkdsk at next startup,is that the right way to do it?
Also, running chkdsk never seems to repair the corrupte
file as after that I usually have the "c:\windows\system32
\config\system is missing or corrupt" syndrome.
TIA,
Frankie.

You are doing it almost correctly. The /f is a limited
check and fix try /r or better yet don't do it by opening
the run instead go start\and double click my computer to
open it and then right click on your main drive(usually c)
and then click properties and then the tools tab and your
full chkdsk utility is here. You can also do a full System
File Check and scan for missing or corrupt Microsoft
Operating System Files by going>start\run and typing in
sfc /scannow and be sure to put the space after sfc. You
will need to have your XP disk or recovery disk handy in
case there are any files missing or corrupt. Good luck.
