Trevor

Since posting the message below I have had one reply to my
problem but unfortuntaely it hasn't helped - thanks anyway!

I still have the problem. Incidentally, there are not any
wires leading to my USB sockets in the computer, they seem
to be fixed directly onto the motherboard.

Can anybody offer any more advice as I am getting tired of
having to constantly plug and unplug USB devices from my
machine!

Thanks,
I am running XP and have two USB sockets on the back of my
PC. I have a cable modem plugged into one and the other is
free. I have now got a usb scanner and usb connector for
my digital camera but neither work when plugged into the
remaining empty socket - they don't show in the device
manager. I have to unplug the modem and use that socket
instead. Incidentally, the modem doeasn't work in the
other socket either. Do I have to configure the other
socket to enable it's use or have I missed soemthing
here...?

Thanks for you help,

Trevor

First check in Controlpanel/system/hardware/device manager/
USB Controllers. If there are no yellow exclamation points
then
the most likely issue is that the cable from the 2nd port
to the
mobo is loose and/or defective. Reseat it and see if that
helps.
There isn't anything to activate, this is a hardware
problem.

Hello,

Your motherboard might not have enough power to sustain
all the devices you pull in at once. This happened to me
with my MP3 player and I bought a USB hub at Wal-Mart and
everything's fine now. But I'm confused when you said
you plugged your modem into the other socket and it
didn't work. I don't know what to say about that.
