Sunny

Thanks for your help so far, Now that I have WinXP up and running.
I need some more hand holding, before I try to recover the missing 20Gb with
WinME on it.
Plucking up the nerve to (in your words) :-)
"Boot with WinXP CD, hit "r" to load recovery console.
from command prompt run bootcfg /add"
(should see WinME and offer to add it to boot menu)"

I have a long record, of cocking up anything that resembles DOS prompts,
and/or missing spaces etc. when required for command prompts.
Before I cock this up (and maybe loose WinXP as well) could you consider the
fol:
1. Has the current WinXP boot overridden "Powerquest Boot Magic"
permanently?
2. A big mistake ? I made in Partition Magic, was to create the new WinXP
partition "Before" the current WinME.
(took nearly 1 hr for PM to move the partitions and files, should have
selected "create after")
3. How would the WinXP bootcfg see and identify the "Hidden" partition ?
4. An outline of what I should expect to see, and how to cancel/escape
from the command prompt would help enormously.
5. Please type slowly, :-)

Hi Sunny,
1. Has the current WinXP boot overridden "Powerquest Boot Magic"
permanently?

Unless you reactivate it, yes. You don't need Boot Magic unless you are
trying to boot the WinME installation from an NTFS partition. If the boot
partition (the location where you currently find ntldr, ntdetect.com, and
boot.ini) is in FAT32, then all you need to do is add the WinME
installation. If the partition it is on is currently hidden from WinXP using
Partition Magic, you need to "unhide" it first, follow PM's help files to
make a partition visible to the installation.
2. A big mistake ? I made in Partition Magic, was to create the new
WinXP
partition "Before" the current WinME.

Nope, it's inconsequential.
3. How would the WinXP bootcfg see and identify the "Hidden" partition
?

As I already mentioned, if you hide the WinME installation from WinXP using
Partition Magic, you need to unhide it or add it to the visible partition
list first.
4. An outline of what I should expect to see, and how to cancel/escape
from the command prompt would help enormously.

For bootcfg, after running /add, you will be prompted to choose an
installation to add (it should show both the existing WinXP one and the
WinME installation), just choose it numerically. For the load identifier,
just type in "Windows ME". You can choose a load option at this point, but
it's not necessary and you can just hit enter. When finished, just type exit
and remove the CD to boot normally. You should see the new boot selection
after it restarts.
5. Please type slowly, :-)

Took me 10 minutes (between sips of coffee and scratching one of the dogs
who felt lonely), was that slow enough? <g>

Thanks Rick, it's almost straight in my mind, just some more ;

Boot Magic is/was installed on WinME so I can't access it.
(I didn't hide anything, but think that PM does that automatically, because
both OS are on a "C" partition)
All I did was make the current partition "active" to install XP
All my partitions are Fat32 (No NTFS here) :-)

Great, took me 12 minutes to read and absorb (and copy) :-)

Hi Sunny,

See comments in-line:

Ok, this may change things a bit. Problem is how they see themselves. WinME
in particular will get confused if its drive letter changes. In addition, PM
has some code in the bootstrap that is causing the hiding. Providing your
version is xp-compatible, you may need to install it under WinXP to make
some of these changes.
Do I need to install Partition Magic in WinXP ?

Possibly, for precisely the reasons mentioned.
bootcfg /add (is there a space between "bootcfg" and "/" ?

Yes, there is. And this may still work *if* WinXP can see the WinME
installation partition. If it can't see it, it can't add it.

I have Partition Magic Ver 8.0 (and the update to Ver 8.01) supposed to be
XP compatible.
Yes, there is. And this may still work *if* WinXP can see the WinME

Thanks again Rick, I will install partition Magic to "look and see" on
WinXP, and follow your other advice.
After setting WinXP up, and getting,
Drivers/network/printers/scanners/camera/zillions of programs installed, and
tweaking to make it look and feel like WinME I am feeling a little smug :-)
Only downside is I am missing WinME, with all my old Flight Sim programs,
and 20Gb of hard drive.

Hi Sunny,

Yes, that is compatible. Good luck and feel free to as any follow-up
questions.
