Hi, guru,
Please help to clear up some questions about WINS.
We have Win2000 Server with running AD, DNS + clients W2000 Pro and W98.
WINS is not installed. Linksys router works as DHCP server. On W98 client PC
"Use DHCP for WINS resolution". How does this option work? Does it mean that
router works as WINS server or something else? Is WINS server always needed
in network with W98 client? For example, can I use LMHOST file for name
resolution? Thanks for any reply or links, where I can find information.

You will have to install WINS on the server. W9x, ME and NT4 still need
WINS.

You need WINS to resolve netbios names. W98 probably only
understands netbios names whereas your W2K clients are AD
and DNS aware. If you want your W98 clients to be able
to "join" your AD domain something has to tell them where
the DC for that is. WINS is the kiddy. Yes LMHOSTS will
work if your domain isn't too big otherwise it will
quickly get unmaintainable.

Thank you very much Marina, Jonh.
I argee, LMHOST file is not effective in big network, but at least I know it
can work this way. But what does it mean "Use DHCP for WINS resolution"? And
who can play role of WINS server in our network (WINS is not installed but
W98 clients work in the domain fine - see server and so on)? Router? I'm
really comfused with it.
Thank you for all reply one more time.

DHCP servers can supply the WINS server IP addresses to
clients along with IP address and DNS server IP address.
"Use DHCP for WINS resolution" should mean use the WINS
IP address supplied by the DHCP server. Alternatively
you can override the WINS settings from the DHCP server.

Another note.
As long as all your systems are on the same broadcast
network you do not require WINS or LMHOSTS files. This
is why your current configuration works.

Hi LB

Not sure if this is will help you but have put the wins sever ip address in
the linksys
it is under DHCP in the router configuration it works for me
