Somewhere along the line XP added a
new choice to its boot menu. That choice reads...

Windows (default)

and it *is* the default. If that entry was actually in boot.ini it would be
simple to edit out but it is NOT in boot.ini. (see below).

Any ideas about that?

The complete boot menu is...
Windows XP-Scooter
Bak XP-YPYC
Windows 98"
Windows (default)

Wonder why Windows 98 is in your boot.ini. There lies your problem. Edit the
boot.ini line to reflect XP

Edit the boot.ini line to reflect XP

It's in the boot.ini to allow booting to Win98 or either of the two XP
installs.

Thanks...lots of interesting stuff but I didn't come across anything dealing
with "ghost" options in the boot menu; i.e., displaying an option that is
*not* in boot.ini. The loader has to be getting it from somewhere but
where??

If this is cut/paste, then your boot.ini. is missing a close
parenthesis after the partition number on this line
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2\WINDOWS="Bak XP-YPYC" =optin /
fastdetect
It should be
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Bak XP-YPYC" =optin /
fastdetect

Good Luck.

Are you sure it's not in boot.ini? I'm not an expert on multi-boot stuff,
but doesn't the 3rd line of your boot.ini define "WINDOWS" as the "default",
i.e. "Windows (default)"? Without that 3rd line, would "Windows (default)"
be added to the menu? wouldn't the first OS under [operating systems] be
considered the default without that 3rd line?

FWIW. --Richard

Thank you, oh sharp eyed one!! That was the problem...I corrected the
syntax and the "ghost" menu choice disappeared.

I really do thank you, trying to solve it was driving me batty.

Maybe you didn't find anything because "ghost" menu option is your own
terminology and nobody knows what that means?

Maybe if you said something like:

This is what I see for my boot options. I do not see (or I expect to
see) this...

Here is the contents of my boot.ini file:

Now that you are a boot.ini expert, why don't you add the XP Recovery
Console to your system in case someday you can't boot XP and can't
find your XP installation CD?

This may come in handy later when you later find other things on your
system that changed with no explanation.

That's pretty much what I did in my OP, sorry if it wasn't clear.

A good idea and one that I implemented long ago when I first started using
XP; however, it is on *my* computer and the problem was on my wife's. Guess
I could put it there too but given her slight use of the machine and
generally few problems it was/is about as easy touse the CD. Of which I
have several copies :)

Thank you for your suggestion though.

Lord knows XP has a penchant for doing that. If it would stop - and if it
were possible to have it as a single user OS - I would like it far better.

The default is determined from the "default" line...this one...

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS

The "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)" in it points to this one...

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP-Scooter"
/noexecute=optin /fastdetect

The "\WINDOWS" within that line points to the Windows directory on that
drive.
______________

My problem arose from a syntax error in the middle entry - the one for "Bak
XP-YPYC". It was missing a close parenthesis between (2 and \Windows.
