Dear ACE sir,

I am very thankful for you given guidance. I gone through all sites
whatever you mention. But there is one query in my mind that I seen there is
created www.example.com site and for that site they created forward lookup
zone and according to that they created cname record. But if I want to creat
another record for www.test.com then I need to again creat forward lookup
zone for this site on same dns server or need to creat only A host record
and cname record. Please guide me. I know this is foolish question but I
want clear my concept sir.

Thanking you.

Yours faithfully,
Vicky Sam.

Hi Vicky,

Under example.com, I would create a www record, and give it the IP address
of your webserver. Under the website properties, make sure www.example.com
is the hostheader.

Under test.com, I would also create a www record, and give it the IP address
of your webserver. Under the website properties, make sure www.test.com is
the hostheader.

In this case, there is no need for any CNAMES. CNAMES can cause some issues,
slower lookups, confusion, etc.

Hope that helps.

Hi Vicky,

I'mnot sure I am understanding your question, but I think you're asking
after everytime y ou create a zone, if you have to create the A records for
the website that you are hosting? If this is the question, yes, just as I
explained in the previous post. You'll need a www 'A' record for each
website.

I was thinking what he was trying to ask was if he needed a separate
zone for each domain. If so, yes Vicky, you need to create separate
zones for test.com and for example.com. You then create host entries for
each domain in the appropriate zone. Hope that helps.

Thanks for jumping in and possibly clarifying this. I wasn't totally sure.

Thanx John and Ace sir,

Yeh I think its good reply from my point of view. What problem is if I
having multiple web site and I having one DNS server with public ip address
no other ip address with me and I want to creat these multiple web sites
records at this one dns server. So my basic question that I need to creat
each time new zone for each web site or creat only A records and cname for
each web sites under single zone. I think Jhon got it my point. What happen
I install dns and creat forward zone name abc.com after that when I am going
to creat record for my one web site under this zone. So I select A record
and type host name like test then its shows me that test.abc.com as FQDN so
I am confuse and same in CNAME record also I type www the FQDN show me
www.abc.com and when I going to select under section of the FQDN for target
host for test. I brows and select the file I created for test so its take as
test.abc.com. So I am very confusing that how to host the web site for test
under abc.com zone or creat seprate zone for test.com site. Thanks for both
of you. And sorry Ace if I am kiding you.

Thanks.

Yours faithfully,
Vicky.

Hi Vicky,

Hopefully maybe John can better help out. I am extrememly sorry, but I'm
having some difficulty following your post.

To try to answer, yes you need to create a zone for each domain. So if you
have domain1.com, and domain2.com, then yes, need two zones. Look at this
example. The IP number I used here is something I am using just as an
example.
domain1.com
www A 208.47.40.10

domain2.com
www A 208.47.40.10

If you add domain3.com, you havbe to do the same thing.

For "test" as a subfolder, there is no need for an IP address or DNS entry.
You create a folder called "test" and put it under the domain1.com website
home folder and you then access it as www.domain1.com/test

For "test" as a separate site, such as test.domain1.com, then you can just
make it another A record, just as www is an A record. No difference. If test
is a separate site and has nothing to do with the www.domain1.com site, then
you'll also want to make sure that name is your hostheader too.

domain1.com
www A 208.47.40.10
test A 208.47.40.10

Hope that helped Hopefully JOhn will jump in and offer some help too, in
case I'm wrong.
