Hi,

I am reluctant to select start - shutdown when turning off my
computer. If I have applications/utilities running I make sure they
are closed before shutting down. That works fine but is very tedious
if dozens of things are running.

Is there a program that will close everything down, including the
computer, PROPERLY ? I want to be 100% sure that no data is
lost and no programs get problems due to my not closing them
down myself.

Regards, John.

Start - Shutdown does all of the above.

In XP I recently discovered "Hibernate", which is not the same as the normal
Standby option.

In Control Panel navigate to Power Options.
Click "Hibernate" and make sure "Enable Hibernation" is checked.
Click "Advanced" and reset the buttons in the lower panel.
I have the Power Button set to "Hibernate" and the Sleep button (on the
keyboard) set to "Ask me what to do".

When hibernated the computer moves everything in memory to the hard disk,
and then switches the computer off. The mains power supply can then be
switched off if required, unlike with Standby. Closing takes only a few
seconds, restart also takes a few seconds and the computer is exactly as it
was when last used, except that internet connection is broken. Look for
"Hibernation" in Help & Support for further details.

I'm not sure whether this facility is provided in other OSs (probably not).

Shutz works fine with XP even though it doesn't say so. It doesn't use
"fast shutdown" techniques. I'm not competent to say "100%sure that no
data is lost", but I've always been very happy with it.

Look here (found this link on a freshly bought CD, which is probably a
good source, as it is from the heise Verlag)
