One Care , Windows update, system restore.

When I manually update one care I get the message on the task bar that one
care is up to date. I still have a red icon and message on the main page
that says the program can not automatically update. Virus and spyware file
dates are current.

Windows update file malicious software removal keeps showing up on the
taskbar (yellow shield). I install it and get confirmation that it has been
installed. Keeps coming back up after internet connection. I have not been
able to get rid of it. Update history shows it has been successfully
installed many times.

System restore will not restore my system. I don't get any message or
response. If I go to the help support page for system restore it has a red
dot next to the system restore title.

Could this all be related? Running Windows XP with dial up connection.
System has been working fine up till a couple days ago. I have not
installed any new software or changed any system settings that I am aware
of.

Any help or ideas will be appreciated,

A side comment: You have dialup so automatic updates would not be
effective as manual updates. Be sure to mention the connection type
you're using to the OneCare folks.

OneCare includes Windows Defender - an anti-malware program. This is
different than the Malicious Software Removal tool that comes through
Windows Update or Microsoft Update. The Malicious Software Removal tool
simply runs after being downloaded. It then disappears if nothing is
found. If it does find a problem, it tells you on the next startup what
it found. From there, you look up the name that the tool told you. There
are often cleanup steps that need to be prepared manually and, if
necessary, some repairs to program or Windows files that may have been
damaged or altered by the malware's activity.

I've never seen a red dot next to System Restore. It is enabled by
default unless you change that behavior or unless something changes it -
either malware or other "restore software" such as GoBack.

In other words, you have several issues here. Separate them and tackle
each - one at a time.
