Can anyone tell me if its worth using this? I'm not a programmer, thus don't
even use Hijack--and the MS beta spyware proggie screwed up my new computer.
I'm using XP Pro, AdAware, Spyblaster, and run Trendmicro weekly, plus all
others in Safe Mode weekly. The MS firewall is turned on.

Thank you.

So you know it Beta, you didn't read the implications of using Beta product!.

screwed up my new computer.
I'm using XP Pro, <AdAware>,< Spyblaster>, and run <Trendmicro> weekly, plus all

All of these and you think they will not cause trouble on your system.

.. The MS firewall is turned on.
Thank you.

Any other information to give for us to know if it is OneCare or other
applications/Hardware defictive causing the trouble will be helpful.
Thank you.
HTH.
Please let us know for further help if it needed.

A little obsessive don't you think? If I were you, I would not install
OneCare until you remove all those other security/protection programs.
Things like that don't usually coexist peacefully.

At the very least, OneCare is all automatic and you won't have to go scan
yourself every day/week/month, plus it does regular maintenance for you too.
And you don't have to go into safe mode ;-)

Beta or not, would you want to trust the security of your computer to a MS
product, given their track record of being unable to secure their OS or
browser?

Anyone who gives this matter even a trifling of thought should run screaming
from any "solution" Microsoft offers for security.

That's a very odd comment, since you use Windows and Outlook Express.

I do not understand Nass' comments. They aren't related to my query. >> So

What is that all about, please?

I'm not sure who is addressing me and who isn't. Sorry, but this is
disjointed. Thank you, though--if its my limitations. Thus far, since 1978,
I've never had a virus or Trojan--and hope I don't. But, thank you.

Simply put, OE and NSW are incompatible. Thus, NSW screwed up my new
computer, and removed all of my Dragon profiles, all the time...I'm a blind
user. Thank you.

What programs do you use then for a browser, System, and e-mail client,
please?

Thank you.

Browser: Firefox (Current Beta 2.0)
System: Triple boot: Windows XP Pro, Windows Vista 64 bit (RC2), and SUSE
(Linux).
E-Mail (Outlook 2003)

Correct, Windows XP is one of the OSes I use. I also use SUSE, and Windows
Vista 64 bit (RC2). I occasionally use Solaris 10.

As far as using Windows XP, I make sure I keep it up-to-date, and I make
sure that I have a hardware firewall to reduce chances of compromise to a
minimum.
I run Windows XP because the apps I use for reporting (I live in one state
and my head office is in another) require it.

I've been using Windows Live One Care for about 5-6 months now, the
first 3 while the entire suite was still in its "beta" phase. Frankly,
I've had few problems with it and it's proved to be a much more
satisfactory solution than the Norton System Works I had used
previously. I've taken the position that MS created the OS I'm using
(XP-Pro), who better to handle the security issues? They should
certainly know better than Norton, McAfee, and the other usual
suspects.
So far, that works for me...

WLOC is no longer in "beta", although the one optional component
(Windows Defender AntiSpy) might still be described as such. It still
seems to be somewhat problematical at this time, so I have chosen to
use Webroot SpySweeper in its place. There doesn't seem to be any
problem in using these two programs in conjunction with each other.
I'll probably switch to Windows Defender when my current SpySweeper
subscription expires.

For more in-depth and targeted information about WLOC I would suggest
checking out the WLOC forums:
http://forums.microsoft.com/windowsonecare/default.aspx? Lotsa' users
as well as MVPs are the contributors, so the information is current and
valuable as far as I'm concerned.

I don't agree with that at all. A software developer isn't better at
identifying a virus, or other malware, just because he works for a company
that wrote the operating system. Malware and operating systems are two
entirely different things and skills at dealing with one necessarily aren't
the same as skills at dealing with the other.

Nor is the size of the company relevant. In my view, Norton and McAfee are
among the worst ant-malware vendors and much smaller companies like those
that produce Avast or AVG are much better.

That is certainly one way to look at the issue, but consider the fact that
Microsoft has never released an operating system or browser that was not
vulnerable to untold numbers of exploits.

If you think about it. Microsoft is the last one to turn to.

Norton, on the other hand, is the undisputed leader in consumer protection.
Norton Internet Security is by far the best "all-in-one" app on the market.
Like any other piece of software, there are those that love it and those
that hate it. I can state that I have never had any network or system with
Norton installed on it compromised. The same cannot be said for *ANY* other
offering, including Avast, AVG, Zone Alarm, etc. Again, this is from my own
personal experience; YMMV.
