I have a direct cable connection set up between two
computers the host is windows XP home edition the second
is windows XP professional. The pro machine is able to
establish a connection to the home machine but the home
edition cannot connect to the pro machine. I am able to
explore the home machine through the connection on the
pro machine both in reading and writing files to it, yet
the home machine cannot access the pro machine at all. I
have also run the network through a hub and a similar
problem exists. The pro machine is able to access the
home machine but the home machine cannot even see that
the pro machine is there besides seeing that there is a
connection established or that the LAN is enabled.
Please help me to enable the home machine to access the
pro machine and to connect to it through the direct cable
connection. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I assume that by "direct cable connection" you mean a crossover
Ethernet cable. That term can also refer to a connection between the
computers' parallel ports.

The most likely problem is that a firewall is blocking access to the
pro machine. Un-install all firewall programs (ZoneAlarm, Norton
Internet Security, etc) while troubleshooting. Permanently disable
XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall, as described here:
