One AD Domain Controller can not talk to another.

Both of my 2 servers are set up with Active Directory. The primary is EDGE1
and the secondary is EDGE2. I can access the folders through the network from
EDGE1 to EDGE2 but when I try to connect through the network places from
EDGE2 back to EDGE1 it fails with the following error:

\\Edge1 in not accessable
Logon Failure: The target account name is incorrect.

This same issue I think is causing problems on the network because it is not
allowing EDGE2 to sync AD data from EDGE1. I saw some suggestions about
removing the machine from a domain and then rejoining but I do not think that
is going to be possible under AD.

why wouldn't it be possible? All servers communicate with the domain controllers
using secure channels and the machine password is involved in that encryption.
If the secure channel is broken communication can not occur. THe only way to fix
that is to rejoin the machine to the domain to reset the machine password and the
machine account (which we've succesfully done at work when file servers couldn't
communicate anymore with the domain controllers).

I guess I am not really saying that it is not possible rather the method
escapes my experience. On a workstation I can go to CONTROL PANEL | SYSTEM
and then in the NETWORK IDENTIFICATION tab there is a CHANGE button. From
there I can change to a workgroup and then back to the domain to reset the AD
entry(ies). On my domain servers those options do not exist. How would I go
about doing that on a AD domain server?

Mike,

Are there any errors in the event logs?
You can add and remove a DC to a domain using the "dcpromo" command but that
is not the solution to the problem. We dont know which one of the 2 DCs is
causing the problem and for that you need to investigate the event log
errors.
Also, investigate that your DNS is setup correctly and both servers point to
your internal DNS that has the domain records.

Nim

His problem is between 2 DCs and not between a Member server and a DC.

I doubt that netdom could be used to reset a trust between 2 domain
controllers.

Nim

No proplem, and btw, I had my doubts even when I thoroughly read the KB's.
Still it worked and saved a DC on which client had critical biz app
installed. (Fixed that 'issue' later)

Well I was all excited to do this since it was one of the possible solutions
I was considering but didn't know where to go. It worked to gain access from
EDGE2 to EDGE1 via the network places and I can even access the SYSVOL
folder. For some reason I am still getting an "Access Denied" error when
trying to force a replication using the Active Directory Replication Monitor.
Also, when I turned the Kerbos Key Distribution Center back on it returned to
the same problem. I have run through the process again and I am going to
leave the Kerbos Key Distribution Center off for a bit to see if that helps.
Maybe I am turning it back on too soon or am I just trying to replicate
before it can sync other info??

Check that you are completly following the KB, including the reboot. You may
still have another replication problem that started all this in the first
place.

Thanks. I will go back through all of my other event soltions and see if they
perform better with better logon acess.

OK, well that's not good. Suggest running dcdiag on the other DC(s) and
verify that neither DC has replicated with the other since 8//31. If these
are Win2000 Dc's and tombstone lifetime is default 60 days then you are
going to need to pick a DC to keep and forceremoval the other. You'll then
need to do a metadata cleanup and dcpromo it back.

Figure out where the FSMO roles are, and if you've made substantial AD
modification in the last 60 days, you might want to see which DC has the
changes you want to keep.

A PSS call at this point is a good investment if this is a production
domain.

Thanks KJ. That is what I have been looking for. I did a really crappy job of
cleaning things up with NTDSUTIL and I may have to do this again in the
future. For now it looks fine and the machines are replicating.

If you are in Washington state and need a band for a party maybe I can help
one day....
