Hello again folks!

I posted a thread around here couple days ago about refresh-rate problems.
Well, now I've done a clean install of Windows (98 SE) and installed
Catalyst drivers and my monitor drivers.
Still the same thing! As soon as I switch to 1152x864 resolution, I get only
60hz refresh rate. It simply won't go any higher, although my monitor DOES
support higher refresh-rates.

Drivers seem to be crappy as well. I've tested several versions - 3.6, .7,
..8 (which are shipped with the card) and the latest - 3.9 . They seem to be
very unstable! I've also noticed, when I open graph-card properties to
adjust AA and AF settings, sometimes my mouse-pointer turns into a square
filled with different colors !!?!?!? This even happens sometimes when I just
open the properties (without changing anything). What the hell is wrong with
this card???

Like the sugar on top, the tweaking utility, called RedLine, which was
shipped with the card, won't install!
I get the message that "cannot copy files" when I start install. The disc is
not damaged, as I managed to transfer the files to the harddrive. When I
retried installing this utility directly from HD, I get the same message!

Some games have issues as well, eg. Call Of Duty and Battlefield looks a bit
wierd if I do custom AA / AF settings.
I know there is fix for these two, but come on people, look at other things
that I listed above!

Do you have any idea (perhaps similar experience) what could be wrong?

My system:

MSI KT3 Ultra2 MB
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
512 MB PC-2100 ddram
Sapphire 9600XT
Windows 98 Second Edition
+ all latest drivers

Have you gone to the 'displays' tab (ATI control panel, not Winblows) and
made sure that the drop-down box for max resolution has at least that
resolution set as 'max'? Also, is the dropdown box for refresh rate set
above 60Hz? Also, is the dropdown box above those two set to 'same as
desktop'? After all those are a 'yes', from you, try setting your refresh
again under the 'monitor' tab.

NO.
The card won't find 75hz at 1152x864 - period.
But forget about that. That's not THAT big problem. Read about other flaws
that I've found.

you have issues with your busmaster/IDE driver for your ROMs, is my guess What mainboard chipset are you using? What
monitor?...remember running an setup.EXE from a CD is different from copying files from on drive to another. If there is a damage
file, then the results will be the same. Also, I would reinstall after all is done, your mouse drivers.

Thoughts on your refresh problem: -

1. Have you got the correct driver installed for your monitor? Although,
W98SE will install a generic 'Plug and Play' driver, the driver is as old as
W98SE and therefore may not be identifying your monitor correctly.

2. Are you using a KVM switch to switch between two PC's? If you are this
may also cause your graphics card to identify the monitor incorrectly. Try
taking out the KVM switch and install the correct drivers for the monitor.

3. W98SE sets all resolutions to 60Hz by default. The simplest way around
this is to select each resolution your will be using and manually set the
refresh rate through the Display Properties>Settings>Advanced>Monitor to the
highest rate your hardware can handle. Personally, I set all mine to 85Hz as
this means you wont have to readjust the monitors setup each time a
resolution is changed. Don't forget to do this for 16 and 32 bit colour if
you're using both.

As for stability issues: -

1. Install the latest GART driver for your motherboard chipset - usually
VIA 4-in-1 (Hyperion v4.9?) or Intel INF utility, depending on chipset
used..

2. Install DirectX 9.0b

3. Disable Fastwrites within the BIOS. Also try setting the AGP aperture
settings to approx half your system memory.

Just my two-penneth worth!
