During my seminars, I often seek student input. The problem is the
information that the students provide is often in a different order from the
way I have the information organized in my slides. Is there any way that I
can select the order items are displayed "on the fly". For example, can I
click on the items to make them appear on the projected image?? Please
help. Thanks. Tom

If using PPT 2002-2003 look into animation TRIGGERS. Creative use of this
new feature will allow you to accomplish what you are looking to do.

Note: Anyone got a good tutorial on using animation triggers yet - if no
reply I'll get one posted this month.

Thanks for the help. It sounds like animation triggers might solve some of
my problems and a tutorial would be appreciated since I can't find much
information on them. However, what if I have a slide with items a,b,c,d,
and e. When I ask the students to come up with points their order is
e,c,a,b,d. How do I change the order of appearance on my slide? Thanks
again. Tom

Tom,

Is this sort of like Family Feud? If so, I have a free sample on my web
site:

http://www.pttinc.com/ppgame.htm#PPGame

If not, you will need to put some sort of buttons or text boxes with your
"a, b, c, d, and e" text on them, then assign the "trigger" to the click of
that object. I could send a brief sample if I knew more about what it was
you were really trying to do (your application for this need).

Bill,
Thanks for the help. I am teaching an Introductory course on Anatomical
Pathology. The students have some limited knowledge about this topic so
rather than me lecturing to them I want to ask them a series of guided
questions and develop the course outline. For Example, The first slide
talks about the type of specimens received in an Anatomical Pathology
laboratory. These specimens include: surgical specimens, autopsy specimens,
cytology, referred in and nondiagnostic specimens. I want the students to
come up with these headings. Obviously I don't know in which order they will
come up with the topics so I need to make each one appear as they select the
topic. I would also like to expand on each topic once it is selected.
Therefore, each topic should trigger another slide with more information and
so on. I hope this clarifies what I want to accomplish. In the "good old
days" one would just write down each topic as the student came up with it I
am hoping that I can do the same thing with Power Point. Thanks Again. Tom

Hi Tom,

Can you tell us which version of PPT you will be using? It makes all the
differnce in the world.

As mentioned by Troy, you can use Triggers. Keep in mind however that
triggers require something to click on to start the animation. Easiest way
to start using it is to create a small rectangle on your slide. Create your
text box for choice 1. Right-click on the text box and select "Custom
Animation", set the "Entrance" animation that you want, in the Task Pane,
click the dropdown arrow next to this animated object and click either
"Timing". Click the "Triggers" button and click the dropdown arrow to
select which object on the slide you want to trigger the animation off of
(in this case your rectangle).

Now when you try it out in Slide Show Mode when you click on your rectangle
the text box appears. If you want to hide this from the students, you can
set the Line Color and Fill Colors of your rectangles to "None". Just
remember where on your slides your rectangles are and which one brings up
which text box.

Hope that helps!

I meant to mention that I had one (a very simple one) in the works, but
I didn't get it uploaded until this evening. It's at
http://www.echosvoice.com/triggers.htm

I'll probably expand on it eventually, but who knows when that
eventually will arrive!

Mind reader! I have one written for All 'Bout Computers (an e-zine) that
will be published next weekend. Shortly thereafter, it will be on my site.

Guess you started something, Troy!

Well, if it's any consolation, I started it over a month ago. It's so
basic, I'm not sure what took me so long to get it finished and
uploaded!
