On-board sound ---> lower frame rates?

Hey all,

I currently have on-board sound, and am planning to get a sound card.

I am quite new to this, and so was wondering if the lack of hardware
acceleration would be causing my frame rates to drop.

In short, will my frame rates improve if I get a sound card? I dont
know how on-board sound works. Is there any actual hardware? Or is it
just emulated in software?

How much impact, if any will it make to gaming?

Thanks!

That all depends what onboard sound you currently have and what games
you are playing.

Hi,
have a read. .

Tom's Hardware Guide - Sound Can Be Hazardous for Games

I'd love to know how my Realtek AC97 does compared to my old SBLive
Value. I'd hate to buy a new sound card just to get an extra 1 percent
or less performance in games. I'm using the onboard sound now because
it's clean, easy, and works well for me. I mean one less PCI slot
taken, less heat, less mess inside is good.

I just wish they'd tested against some older soundcards like many
people now have vs. the onboard sound.

BYW, my MB is a Gigabyte 8SQ800U.
