I have a MS-7185 (MSI) mobo with a built-in ethernet. It quit working. I
stuck in an extra card, and everything works fine. So I guess the only
thing it can be is the mobo ethernet.

Does this mean I need a new mobo (still under warranty)?

Only if the onboard nic doesnt work with a clean install
or say the ubuntu bootable CD with the card removed.

Try deleting it from Device Manager and rebooting, Windows should find it
and reinstall drivers.
Also look for updated chipset drivers for m/b and install them.

If it's still under warrenty, go ahead and replace it (if it's not just
a driver issue, Or disabled in the bios) But I wouldn't consider the
failure of the onboard NIC to be fatal.
