I found a copy of Caere OmniPage Pro 7 in its original box in a thrift
store for $3.99. Installation went fine under Win2K, until a screen
came up telling me that for serial number
2807A-C00-012606
I needed to phone 1-800-488-1133 and give them
key 61435532
and they would give me a Registration Number:
Otherwise, my ability to use the software would end at session 25.
Well, this is an old product, maybe 10 years and guess what? The 800
number doesn't work anymore (at least not here in Canada). The
OmniPage product line (now up to version 15 or so) seems to be owned by
a company called Nuance. Nuance wants $10 just to ask them a question.
I tried registering online (no Registration Number came back, just a
survey with way too many way too personal questions), and I also tried
the Online Product activation, but their computer responded that my
Serial Number was invalid.
I had a bad experience with Pagis (Pagis Pro 2.0) those years ago, and
at the time Caere had a good reputation. But www.pagis.com now
resolves to www.nuance.com. So it's all one big happy family now, eh?
Anyway, I suppose I'll have 24 tries at this product to see if it is
the kind of thing I want. Unless somebody knows another way to get a
Registration Number for this old product.
Incidentally, on the software box, Caere UK is listed at Abbey House, 4
Abbey Orchard Street, Westminster ... I wonder if that has anything to
do with the Abbyy OCR product?
