Can it be done? I need a list like

A. asdfjk
B. xhjg00tysd
D. dhf8u45
E. etc.

in order to match numbering from a document received.

Use the List style (or one of its subordinates) and type in the letters
manually.

Suzanne, thanks for your prompt reply. I found that Format/Bullets and
Numbering/Customize gives me an option to change the number (or letter). I was
going to answer myself -- but dinner intervened.

I wouldn't do that if I were you. You're just asking for grief.

Suzanne,

As you are the expert I will take your advice -- next time.

What grief might ensue?

Whenever you restart numbering at a specific number (which I assume is what
you did), you are adding complexity. Word's handling of auto numbering is
always a bit flaky at best, so unless you really need it, it's best avoided.
When you need auto numbering is when you are going to be adding or deleting
numbered items and need the numbering to resequence automatically. When what
you need is for the numbering to remain unchanged (as when you are
replicating numbered sections from another text, especially if the numbering
is not sequential), it makes much more sense to apply the numbering
manually.
