While browsing and without my knowledge I had the
misfortune of having "winlogon.exe" installed into the
following directory on my computer:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup
The file has the effect of making omega-search.com one's
home page upon booting up the computer, despite efforts to
manually restore any other home page.
Following advice from the IE Knowledge Base, I rebooted my
computer in safe mode and removed the file, and that seems
to have solved the problem. But the search for the source
of the problem and its remedy consumed several valuable
hours. I hope others will be able to deal with this
problem more effiently.
