I have the latest Catalyst drivers. Can anyone tell me what's better (or
worse) about the Omega drivers? Are they stable?

As stable as the ATI ones, the driver behind them is to
increase graphics quality in games & they usually include the
softmods that work with some of the cards.

Some people like them some people don't, some people find
they work better for their rig than the official, some people
don't.

Best bet is to try them for yourself and see which works for
you.

They are tweaked for gamers not bench

They are slower (for me) than the old ones. However, I seem to spot
that the image quality is better, maybe I'm getting old and the
eyesight's failing. Both versions are more stable than those before.

Certain test done claim that they are slightly faster even, but yes
it's more about the eye candy then the speed of the drivers!

Well the guy behind them does state they are aimed at upping
game image quality, and he also states don't bother using them
with benching programs such as 3dmark if your after a high
score.

I've just removed the new Omega driver and re-installed the ATI one. My
system froze twice this evening - when it's normally rock solid. I didn't
notice any improvement in the visuals or the speed so there seemed little
point in keeping the Omega driver. But it appears to have removed itself
without problems.

I have the Radeon 9700 Pro and the difference I found between the ATI
4.1 and the Omega driver is that my CPU Barton 3200+ under full load
is about 10C cooler with the Omega driver. Can anyone explain that?

Fair enough, no point in using something that doesn't sit
well with your system.

Must admit in the past I've noticed no real improvement with
these visually, but have never had an instability caused
either.

This is the first time I used Omega and they kick ass, DVD's look awesome.
Its a shame a third party programmer has to make ATI's own drivers better.

You tested that out during gaming? ... wow...well maybe it offloads
more jobs of the cpu to the gpu. Or runs less background "tasks" while
handling the video.

Maybe it influences the GPU fan to work different...

Whatever it is.... 10 degrees less is very nice on such a hot
processor! And with omega you ofcourse also get better quality in
games.

Yes, at design level there are lots of functions on the card that are
never implimented on any release card, or perhaps only on some, e.g.
VIVO.

The GPU is processing all of these unwanted functions, or at least
polling for them. Wasted cycles & increased heat.

On the Omega site seven or more years ago I recall reading that one of
the tweaks he does is to switch off all non-essential functions
especially the DirectX elements.

I have the temperature alarm set to 55C on motherboard monitor and
never had it go off until I installed the 4.1 catalyst. After
installing the Omega driver and playing Unreal Tournament 2003 it did
not reach 50C. At idle now it seems to hang around 46C. I could make
it cooler but I dislike fan noise.
