older programs and Vista

Hey All. I recently purchased a Gateway with pre-installed Vista Home
Premium. My last computer suffered damage to the motherboard, so I salvaged
the hard drive and video card and placed them in the new Gateway. They seem
to work fine with no reported conflicts. I intended to reinstall my old
programs to the primary hard drive one by one, then gather saved data like
pics and vids from the old hard drive followed by a wipe of the old hard
drive. However, several programs won't recognize Vista as a operating system
and I can't install them. Some will run from their executables off the old
hard drive.
Is there any danger to the system by running .exe's off the old hard drive
since none of those are in the registry? Also, I think of Vista as
generally a useless memory devouring, piece of crap so can I make the
computer load and use XP off the old hard drive?
On another note, I continually recieve COM Surrogate, run32dll, and windows
media player shutdown alerts while trying to capture video from my DV
camcorder.

Any help is appreciated.

Many programs require more than the executable to run, i.e. as part of the
installation process, they install data libraries (DLLs) which may be in the
folder for the program or may be installed somewhere else, e.g. the Windows
folder or the System32 folder. I suspect that it is not a question of the
programs not recognizing Vista, but of not having the DLLs installed.
Generally, programs that run under XP can be installed and run in XP
Compatability mode and Run as Administrator.
 
Now there's a solution... just do without.

Flash Player will not run if UAC is running.
But, who needs animation on the web?

Of course, it's not a problem if you don't use IE 7 which came with
Vista and wasn't a problem in Win XP because IE 7 didn't come with
"Protected Mode." (But, it doesn't help to turn it off.)

Flash player WILL run with UAC running (well it does on my computer).

The trouble with people expect ALL their XP software to run fine on vista.
Some of the programs (or if not most) will needed to be updated to run fine
in vista.
Saying this though it does not mean that there is anything wrong with vista.
I am running vista and I have NO complaints about it. I have a fair amount
of software on my computer that works without ANY problems.

LOL! That's a great marketing angle for Microsoft. Hey try Vista, if
the software you want to use and have been using in XP no longer works
with Vista, just do without out.

Just curious, so I switched UAC back on and visited one of my all
Flash sites I authored and it works fine for me. No nag screen, all
the Flash, which is extensive including embedded videos works
correctly.

What version of Flash Player are you using?

While you may have a fair amount of software and even be an
experienced user that doesn't mean you'll run into some of the
problems others have with file permissions and ownership issues which
has everything to do with the FILE SYSTEM and how now Vista blocks
access and nothing to do with the software directly.

If you as a user, more correctly some of your software while still
running under XP took ownership of files and thus becomes the defacto
owner or Vista assumes it did, then these folders and files can get
assigned "special" owner permissions, that Vista may under certain
situations refuse to let you take control of no matter what while UAC
is turned on.

This is a nightmare for people that have massive amounts of files that
fall in this category like I have. I'm still undoing the mess Vista
created.

I'll revisit it in a day or two when I'm not so frustrated.
(It's not that important to me. I was more concerned this was a generic
problem.)

Another post pointed out something I didn't consider which kind of explains
the randomness of problems being reported:
Vista assignment of "Special Permissions" to files preventing proper
ownership while UAC is turned on.

Looks like another direction to look into.

Wrong. You need the right version. Blame Adobe for not programming the
version you're using properly. Why does a Flash player need system
level access?
 
Have you tried adding rundll32 to your data execution prevention ignore list?
I'm having the same problem and it's quite annoying so I added it to my
ignore list along with com surrogate. If any more system files act up I'll
keep adding them until the retarded messages stop.
 
I have gotten two old program systems to work (quicken & gazo). Both failed
to install using the old installation disk (several yearyold)
So I copied the full folder of data and programs to the same location on
the vista. both operate properly. but on one when I drag the execution icon
to the desktop, Vista destroys the icon with the error message that the
program was improperly installed. But using the icon from explorer the system
operates properly.
