any sugestion to this: I installed old cd-rom burner (used win 98se) into new
computer (using win XP sp2). CD player worked for a few days then just
stopped. The computer won't recognize any CD player and I have tried
installing newer HP CD burner. Still nothing. So I can't try reinstalling XP
to fix any corrupted files. I recieved an error message but didn't notice it
in time and can't find a log of error messages (is that available in XP?) I
don't want to reformat the whole hard drive and start over, I did get MY
WHOLE LIFE transferred from the 98se computer before this happened. Someone
suggested using an external drive to reinstall but i haven't one and don't
know if it would work.

HELP, PLEASE!!!

Try this: boot into Safe Mode, open Device Manager, remove ALL instances of
any CD drives you see, reboot, and see if Windows will re-detect the new CD
burner and install the drivers.
