Hi, I have an old Windows 98 Packard bell PC which is dumped in the corner of the playroom. I am loath to get rid of it as it has loads of photos on, some of which I fear may not be elsewhere yet, but I could really do with the space that the huge monitor takes up.

Can I somehow attach it to my laptop and use that as a monitor? If I do this is there any risk of causing damage to the laptop. I would only want to do it long enough to browse through the photos.

If I can't do it I shall just have to put up with the monitor long enough to check all the photos and get them on a disc.

Thanks for your time.

unfortunately laptops can only output their display onto a monitor (well as far as i am aware anyway)

your alternatives are to get a flat screen monitor as it'll take up less space than the old CRT, most LCD tv's will have an PC input so you could use that if you have one already?

or you can buy an external hard drive to put all of the photos on and then you can hook it up to your laptop when you want to look at them.

Here my idea...Have a loo at <a href="http://www.usbnow.co.uk/External_Hard_Drives/c10/index.html?gclid=COrix4yVypcCFRpUEAodaF9SSA">this</a. Site and buy yourself a USB external HDD case..Stip out the HDD from 98 machine and fit it to HDD case...Then extract all the photos and data you need from the 98 HDD to your laptop..Then reformat external HDD...There ya go Bobs your uncle, you have the photo's you want plus a new extranl HDD for any sort of storage you want...

Assuming both machines have an Ethernet port and are both using a version of Windows why not just get a crossover ethernet cable and network them? That way you could transfer the photos acroos to the laptop or just view them at your leisure.

And by doing that you could throw away the CRT monitor.

Or you could just get a memory stick, say 4Gb, and put all the pix on that.

Not sure, I do have several ports on my laptop, except for the three USb ports, haven't got a clue what they are, i'll have a look at what one looks like. :)

Have a couple of spare crossover cables if you require one???

£1.50 to cover the postage and its yours.

Thought those were USBs but didn't like to say. :o

I do definitely have an ether net port on the laptop, will look on the PC. I even think I have a cable somewhere. if not I may take you up on your offer.

Thanks for you help again guys.

If you ever want to know about ferrets you know where to come

Crossover cables usualy have the words "cross over" written on the sheathing. Apart from that they look just like an ordinary ethernet cable.

;)

That would be the one I used temporarily to set a network up with our family PC before I worked up how to do wireless then. Pretty sure it is still in a box in the spare room.

I just miss read really, but at the end of the day you can use a cross over cable from ethernet to ethernet port or you canuse a USB transfer cable from USB to USB port..Either way I gave a good answer and so did the others..And making comment about something if you think it is incorrect or different, often helps the person that made the statement..

I quite agree you have all been very helpful, which is why i come back here. I just didn't feel confident enough in my recognising a USB to say anything. Sorry. :o

Hopefully I can sort it out now, thanks again.
