If you are trying to totally reinstall XP and delete the
previous version you would boot with the XP CD and have it
do a format of the XP partition, install the earlier version
of XP and then upgrade to SP2 and all its later patches. If
you need to do a repair install, keeping all the program
connections with the OS and data on the partition, follow
John John's instructions for slipstreaming.

Ouch! Sounds painful. ;-)

You get that message because you're using a pre-SP2 XP CD and trying
to update an SP2 version (which is newer).

But if you're trying to reinstall XP, it doesn't matter, because
you're doing it wrong. When you install cleanly, it doesn't matter
what version is on the drive (or whether any version is on the drive).
To do a clean installation correctly, just boot from the Windows XP CD
(change the BIOS boot order if necessary to accomplish this) and
follow the prompts for a clean installation (delete the existing
partition by pressing "D" when prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

or here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm

or here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

After installation, you'll need to upgrade to SP2 and then install the
post-SP2 updates.

You need to get the computer to boot up to the CD. The most common way of
getting into CMOS settings is to press <DELETE> whilst it's booting. (There
are others including F1, F2). Be very careful to change the boot up
sequence so the CD/DVD is the first in the sequence. Then, with the CD in
the drive you'll be asked to format the hard drive and to install Windows.
Have a look at my information sheet at
www.1001solution.co.uk/reformating_a_hard_disk_drive.pdf.

When you've installed Windows make sure to change the boot up sequence to as
it was before.

Hi,
I had this problem with my Windows XP Home disk after my computer was updated
to Service Pack 2. My workaround was to create a new slipstreamed disk with
Windows XP (Home) + SP2 and the other upgrades. Do a search for "Slipstream XP
Home and SP2. There are the other "Hot Fixes" you can also include. Without
the slipstreamed disk you cant complete a "SFC /SCANNOW". Hope this helps.
