Hi, there is probably an obvious answer to this but I'm quite new to all
this so I need some help.

I have a floppy disc with an old excel spreadsheet on it from Windows ME.
I've just got a new PC with Windows XP and can't seem to get the file
opened. It comes up with the message "Windows cannot open this file". It
then gives the option of using the web to find the appropriate program or
select the program from a list.

Any ideas?
TIA

Speadsheets are opened by a program that are part of MSOffice or MSWorks, it
has nothing to do with WinME. If you created a spreadsheet on your old PC
then you must have had one of those programs installed.
I believe you can download a excel viewer from Microsoft, otherwise you will
need to purchase MSOffice or MSWorks or maybe the single program Excel. But
you really need to know what you used to create the spreadsheet originally,
but it certainly wasn't windows ME.

best of luck

Do you have Excel on your computer?

Suggestions:

1. copy the file to the hard disk and work on it from there.
2. what is the file extension, e.g. *.xls, or *.wk1, or something else?
The error message you are getting is because your computer does not
recognize the file extension. You don't have appropriate software
installed to view a file with this extension. That's why it's asking
you want you want it to do.
3. Windows ME doesn't have ability to create Excel spreadsheet files.
You must have had Excel (or some other spreadsheet program). Do you have
Excel on your current machine (it is not part of Windows XP either).
4. You can get an Excel viewer (reads Excel *.xls files) for free
download from Microsoft's web site. You can also find free spreadsheet
programs that are likely to be able to read old Excel files, e.g.
OpenOffice.

File extension is .xls

It is an old excel spreadsheet. I have Microsoft works on my current
machine and this does have spreadsheets.

I'll try downloading these.

Many thanks for your help.

No, Microsoft Works Spreadsheet is most definitely _not_ Excel,
and I seriously doubt that it can read Excel files.

My copy of Microsoft Works Version 7 can write to Excel 97-2000, Excel
5/96, Excel 4.0 so it presumably can read those formats also. I also
find it can read a *.xls file that was written in Excel 2003 format.

Greetings --

Really? I certainly wouldn't have expected that. ;-} Thanks for
the education.
